We have just received an update on the status of the Pediatric Cardiac Care Institute in Santiago, for which our club donated $2500.00 towards the building of this new facility:   Due to the down turn in the economy there has been a delay in beginning the actual construction, although the foundation has been dug for several months. Anticipated funding from a major US donor was not received,  causing the delay in going to the next step in the building phase. It is hoped this donor will be able to provide the committed funding within the near future.
In February, Lynda Hammond met with both Rotarians Juan Ramirez, MD and David Crow, President of International Children's Heart Foundation Dominican Republic. The building design is currently being re-designed and scaled down to only one level, with the potential to expand to a second story in the future. Fortunately, the architects are also Rotarians who have donated their services.  This effort will significantly reduce the funds required to complete the project. There is also a potential that the Dominican government may take a more active roll to complete the building construction.  As the project progresses, She will keep us posted.
